Now a days, College students experience high level of stress in many areas of life. This is because of stiff competition, peer pressure and necessity to use electronic gadgets. Mobile phone addiction andexcessive use oflaptops has increased sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety & overall stress. Potential expectations, home-sickness, financial burden, eating disorders are also the factors that cause anxiety among students. So the present day life style calls for Yoga & Meditation to be an integral part of life and these should be placed indeed on the upper pedestal for overall development of students.
To provide long term solution to such mental health challenges of modern techno-world, a “Yog and Dhyan Kendra” has been established in the college. In this Kendra, students are taught not only the importance of yoga and meditation but they are also being guided about various methods of performing yoga and meditation. For this, in the beginning of every semester, students of the college are divided into groups. Each group contains approximately 50 to 60 students. Every Saturday, a schedule is prepared for the next week in which it is decided that in the coming week which class will be taken to “Yog&Dhyan Kendra”. In this weekly schedule, duties are assigned to teacherswho accompany students to the “Yoga and Dhyan Kendra”. This information is communicated to students and the concerned teachers through an official notice.
In this Kendra different physical & mental exercises are taught to students. The things that are taught to students here basically consist of four parts. In the first part, they chant ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and ‘OM’. In the second part, they do physical exercises and stretching. Then students are being guided to perform three rounds of Surya Namaskar(Sun Salutation) and Pranayama. Science has proved and recognized the healing power of sun and the health benefits of ‘Sun Salutation’. After doing three rounds of Surya Namaskar, guided meditation is performed for 15-20 minutes. It reduces the mental pressure of the students and increases their concentration towards their goals. After doing Pranayama for five to seven minutes, they meditate. In last they are motivated by the teachers to include all these practices in their daily routine to get maximum health benefits out of it.
