In his inaugural address, Dr. Avinash Bawa, Head, Department of Education, introduced the theme of the seminar and focused on the changing relationship between the teachers and students over a period of time. He referred to guru-shishya tradition of the ancient times when the pupils used to live in the gurukuls along with gurus to get education. This tradition underwent changes with the arrival of Muslim and English rulers. During the British regime, the present day formal system of education was introduced and the teachers became employees. Then, with the arrival of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education, the face to face contact between the teachers and students was lost. With the arrival of On-line Education and Flipped mode of teaching and learning, the teacher-taught relationship further got affected.
He also spoke about the contribution of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan as a Professor of Philosophy, Vice Chancellor of Andhra University and Banaras Hindu University, as an ambassador to Soviet Union, and Vice-President and President of India.
Dr. Udyan Arya, in his lively and inter-active discourse, spoke about the qualities of a good teacher. He emphasized on the qualities of self-reflection and self-retrospection. He said that we should not easily get impressed by others as it leads to inferiority complex. He said that we should not associate respect with material things. Teacher-taught relationship will be strengthened when there is a proper coordination between the two. He also answered the queries of the pupil-teachers.
In his presidential address, Dr Pardeep Bhandari, principal of the college, appealed to the students to get inspiration from the life of Dr. Radhakrishnan. He also summed up the issues raised by Dr. Udyan Arya and said that the students must have a feeling of respect for the teachers. He also spoke about the respectable distance between the teachers and the students.
In the end, Prof. Jaswinder Singh presented a formal vote of thanks. Prof. Manjeet Kaur conducted the stage. Dr. Munish Kumar, Prof. Parveen Kumari and students of the Department of Education were present on the occasion.
