An online webinar on “Solid Waste Management” was organized by Department of Botany to celebrate World Earth Day on April 22, 2021 under the directions of Principal Dr. Pardeep Bhandari. World Earth Day is an annual event marked by UNESCO to support environmental protection. Dr. Rakesh Joshi from Department of Botany & Environmental Sciences, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib was the resource person. Worthy Principal, Heads of various Departments, faculty members and 46 students attended the webinar.
Dr. Rakesh, Head Department of Botany, welcomed the resource person, Principal and participants. Prinicipal Dr. Pardeep Bhandari also welcomed the speaker, and highlighted the significance of Indian tradition where Earth has always been treated as Mother. He additionally stressed on the meaning of Sanskrit language verses recited throughout havan yajnas that teach us the supremacy of fire, earth, wind and water. He also thanked the speaker for accepting the invitation at very short notice. The speaker was introduced to the audience by Dr. Rakesh Kumar.
Dr. Rakesh Joshi started his talk by explaining various types of solid waste that we generate in daily life and varied techniques to manage it. He further narrowed down his talk to organic waste management by using the technique of vermicompositing. He explained to the audience the process of creating vermicompost unit at our homes and also showed how earthworms convert the kitchen waste into usable organic manure. He also discussed one of his research works with students where he showed how using vermicompost significantly enhanced the growth parameters in tomato plant as compared to control groups.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar (Head, Department of Botany) asked a few questions on behalf of the students that were satisfactorily answered by the speaker. The webinar ended with a vote of thanks.
